5 Smarter Choices For Your Pet’s Health

Our animals depend on us to make the right choices for their health and happiness. We know the things we need to do to keep our bodies strong and healthy. It’s not much different for them. If you want to ensure that your pet lives a long and healthy life, start by making smarter and healthier choices for them.

1. Diet & Nutrition

Would you want to spend your entire life eating nothing but cereal? Sure you could survive off of Frosted Flakes but think of how your body would feel. It’s the same for our pets. They need a variety of nutrients in their diet in order to live longer healthier lives.

What to consider when choosing the right food for your pet:

  • Speak with your vet and research what type of diet is best for your particular animal

  • Read the labels and select brands that have proteins listed as the primary ingredients

  • Avoid products that rely mostly on fillers, like grain, corn or soy

  • Feed them the correct amount of food, 60% of American pets are obese due to overfeeding

If you can’t resist giving them snacks from the table make sure it’s healthy ones. There are plenty of fruits and vegetables that are nutritious treats for both cats and dogs.

2. Exercise & Mental Stimulation

Animals need exercise and mental stimulation every day. Some dog breeds need up to 2 hours a day. If you notice your dog displaying destructive behaviors part of the problem could be a lack of exercise and mental stimulation.

Training your dog is a great way to exercise and challenge them mentally. Dogs respond really well to reward-based training so be sure to use healthy natural dog training treats when you’re working with them.

Cats enjoy playing with their owners in short 10-15minute bursts. They love to engage their hunter instincts. Choose toys that remind them of small prey and are things they can chase after or pounce on.

3. Understand Your Pets

Understanding your pets and paying attention to what they like and dislike is extremely important. A change in your animal’s behavior could be an early warning sign of illness. It’s up to you to understand what they’re trying to say.

Anticipate situations that are going to cause your animal stress or anxiety. Such as holiday fireworks or trips to the vet. Start working with your pet ahead of time to prepare them for these situations. Consider using CBD oil which can help them remain calm during stressful moments. According to Tim Nasimul, CEO of Chill Paws, “just like in humans, when animals are given CBD it has a calming and balancing effect on their endocannabinoid system.”

4. Regular Visits to the Vet

A strong relationship with a vet you trust is crucial for your pet’s health. A good vet will be able to advise you on the right diet, amount of exercise and which vaccinations your animal needs. Regular screenings for parasites can catch a problem early before it has a chance to become serious.

Dental hygiene is also very important but often overlooked. If it’s too difficult for you to brush your pet’s teeth regularly then look for special treats and toys that clean their teeth and keep their gums healthy. Studies have shown that taking care of your animal’s oral health can prolong their life by as much as 3 to 5 years.

5. Grooming

Grooming helps you stay aware of what is going on with your pet’s body and health. You’re more likely to notice new lumps, rashes or dry patches on their skin if you groom them regularly. It’s not just about the fur. Eyes, ears and nails also need to be cleaned or clipped habitually.

Grooming them from an early age teaches them to stay relaxed when they’re touched. You can still train an older animal to stay calm while being groomed. Just start with gentle touches to the paws and legs before you work your way up to the body.

Pets give so much joy, companionship and love. As cherished members of the family, they enrich our lives every single day. Making smarter choices for your pet's health will help them live longer, happier lives.
