Growing Your Pet-Sitting Business

Growing Your Pet-Sitting Business

The new year is almost upon us, and it’s a great time to think about how to grow your business in 2024!

Whether you want to attract more clients, add different kinds of animals to your pet care repertoire, make more public relations contacts, or build your social media skills and presence, you can find authoritative resources on the NAPPS website http://petsitters.org/.

As a NAPPS member, you can take advantage of others’ experienced insights into animal behavior, care, and emergency response, and lend credibility to your business as a supported and respected member of our prestigious national organization.

What’s available to you? It’s more a question of what isn’t! From legal, financial, marketing, social media, certification in animal care and first aid, to opportunities to learn from others with expertise in the field, you can use all the resources NAPPS offers.

Our private Face Book page for members is another place for ideas, experience sharing, and exchange of tips and tricks with other business owners. This can be   a gold mine, especially for our newer NAPPS sitters.

If you haven’t yet taken advantage of social media to showcase your business, NAPPS offers information and guidance on making your business known in your communities.

Other resources for you:

  • NAPPS Marketing Guide and materials
  • Presents 4 Pets Guide and materials (P4P)
  • NAPPS-branded handouts for clients and businesses
  • Pertinent blogs on the NAPPS website

Here are some examples of outreach that can help you expand your business:

  • Word of mouth: Yes! Simply letting people know in conversation about what you offer their pets can lead to signing new clients
  • Social media: local Face Book groups, NextDoor, mention on local businesses’ social media, your own website and other social outlets
  • Public relations: creating relationships with area media, businesses, animal rescue organizations and shelters that will make sure you are mentioned in their materials or broadcasts, together with photos or your logo where appropriate; make your business the “go-to” for pet-related information
  • Promotions: tie-ins with pertinent area sales and events held by pet supply stores and others as mentioned above, or offering a special introductory rate to your new clients, etc.
  • Promote annual pet “days,” e.g., National Cat Day, National Shelter Animals Awareness Day
  • Create relationships with your area veterinarians, and ask that they refer clients to you and display your business materials
  • Distribute your own newsletter, blog posts, etc. to your client email list
