Home Routines That Help Pets Thrive

Having a home routine for your pets is important for their happiness and well-being. Just like humans, animals need structure in their day to feel safe and secure. Whether you have a dog or a cat, creating consistent routines can help them feel relaxed and comfortable, even when you’re not around. Here are some simple routines to help your pets thrive.

Regular feeding schedule

A regular feeding schedule helps your pet know when to expect their meals and makes it easier for you to monitor their eating habits. Try to feed them at the same time each day. If something comes up and you’re a little late, don’t worry too much — flexibility is important! For example, daylight saving time might shift feeding schedules, but sticking to a routine will help your pet feel more secure.

Morning and evening routines are important

Having a morning and evening routine with your animal that includes time to bond is a great way to instill love and trust. Whether it’s a morning cuddle or head rub, a quick play session or just a kiss on their furry faces, pets love to feel the love from the humans they adore the most. Prior to the pandemic, my daily routine with my goldendoodle, for example, would include getting up and preparing for the work day ahead. As I would get ready, he would go and sit by the back door because he knew I was dropping him off at doggie daycare (his absolute favorite place to be!) Now that I work from home, we take a morning walk before I start my work day. This routine helps both of us start our day on the right foot (and paw)!

Designate a sleep area for your pet

Just like humans, pets need a designated sleep area. Whether it’s their own cozy dog bed, a soft cushion, a cat tree near a window, or your bed, pets need to be able to have a place to rest and relax without distractions. My dog has his own pillow on the end of my wrap-around couch. He loves the dog-friendly material and you’ll often catch him there snoozin’ the day away. Setting a regular bedtime also helps your pet know when it’s time to rest, which is essential for their overall health.

Regular grooming routine

Regular grooming is vital for your pet’s health. Brushing your pet’s fur helps prevent mats, reduces shedding, and gives you a chance to check for skin issues or pests like fleas. Dogs may need more frequent brushing, while cats typically groom themselves. However, cats can still benefit from occasional brushing and nail trimming. Brushing your dog’s teeth should also be part of their grooming routine –– it is not cheap to get dental work done for animals, so prevention is key!

Have other family members assist with the daily routine
Routines aren’t just helpful for pets; they make life easier for pet owners, too! If you have kids, involve them in your pet’s routine. This can include feeding, water refills, or administering medication. Having consistent routines helps everyone stay on track and ensures the animal is well-cared for.

Consistent Rules and Boundaries
Finally, consistency is key in maintaining good behavior. Whether it's not allowing your dog to jump on the furniture or keeping your cat out of the kitchen, sticking to clear rules will help your pet understand what is expected of them. The more consistent you are with boundaries, the more secure your furry family member will feel. By setting up regular routines for your pets, you’re creating an environment where they can feel safe, happy, and healthy.
