Incorporating Dental Care into Your Pet Business

Are you looking to diversify offerings to your clients in your pet care business?

February is pet dental month- so let's dive into how you can incorporate pet dental care in your pet sitting business service offerings!

First, the Simple Option:

1.Become THE connection for your clients about community dental resources.

This could include:

  • Gather information on proper dental care for pet owners
  • Share on all social media platforms
  • Create a printable flyer left after a visits about at home care
  • Write a blog post on your website with dental tips

Some Speaking Points Should Include:

  • Dental Prophy Levels and guide charts
  • Recommendations of dental chews, toothpaste, brushes, wipes, water additives etc.
    • PRO TIP- add affiliate links if you have them!

  • Frequency calendar of when these items should be used daily/weekly/monthly
  • Local Pet Stores information that offer certain dental care products
  • Local Veterinarians explaining a dental process

Also design a list of recommendations plus create videos interviewing places that do dental care for pets such as:

  • Maintenance Dental Care by Local groomers
  • Non-anesthesia dental locations
  • Anesthesia based care from Veterinarians in your area (basically all general practices!)

Next, the Intermediate Option

2. Add a Teeth Brushing Service to Scheduled Visits.

  • Brush pets teeth during scheduled visits using clients supplies of toothbrush, pet approved toothpaste, or dental wipes.
  • Use Dental Water additives during visits to water sources
  • Upcharge for this!
    • Per request- a lump sum per 'x' set of visits, or per occurrence.
    • We have seen persons charge $3-5/per brushing easily.
    • Groomers charge upwards of $10 per occurrence if done as an add on service.

PRO TIP: Brushing teeth is considered grooming so you would need to add a grooming addition to your pet company insurance!

Finally, the Advanced Option

3. Add an entire new section to your company by offering Anesthesia Free Dentals!

Here is some general basics about Anesthesia Free Dentals:

  • Anesthesia Free Dentals are  intended for pets that are at a Level 1 or 2 Dental Cleanliness level.
  • This type of care is intended  for maintenance between or to avoid Anesthesia based dentals due to pets medical status and their humans personal medical goals for their pet.
  • Pets that need additional medical care such as extractions or have severe periodontal disease are not candidates.
  • It's okay if you don't know the specifics- hire trained professionals such as Veterinary Technicians to do the jobs.

The Service includes:

  • Start with a consultation to determine if a good candidate for the service
  • Then, Scrape off tarter on all teeth while pet is awake and positioned in the humans lap
  • Hand Polish teeth (optional)
  • Finish with a chlorhexidine based mouth rinse or wipe.

Pro Tips:

  • Block off 45 minutes - 1.5  hours per pet
  • Companies charge $125-200 per pet on average
  • Sell clients to rebook 2-4 times a year
  • Partner with local dog boarding facilities, day cares, or even groomers to offer this service at their campus on certain days.
  • Additional Business Insurance is needed like the Intermediate Step.
