Why do older pets need special attention and care? Their bodies and minds have changed to accommodate their years; their emotional
states may have altered, as well.
Our clients may not be aware of seniors’ need for different food, activity levels, and veterinary care. This is where we come in!
NAPPS Members Only section features our Certification Courses, and within there are sections on Caring for Senior Cats as well as Senior Dog Care. If you haven’t looked at these, please do! This information will be crucial in educating your clients who have older pets.
How will you take advantage of Senior Pet Month? Here are a few suggestions:
- Offer clients a flyer/pamphlet on basic senior information
- Discuss your observations of current health and age of the pet with clients, and talk about any changes needed during your visits
- Check with area veterinarians for emphasis on aging pets this month and see if your business can tie in with any educational opportunities vets are offering
- Contact area pet supply stores about a cross promotion, i.e., a special sale on items or one special item (heated pet bed, raised food dish set, etc.) geared to seniors, and your logo and NAPPS logo on promotional materials (signage, etc.)
- Work with your local media to promote Senior Pet Month, “brought to you by…” and how your business cares for seniors, plus a sound bite from you about same and plug for NAPPS/your business
- Contact area shelters holding senior animals, and try to set up a promotion emphasizing the appeal of older pets, with NAPPS and your business information handed out to everyone seeking a new family member this month – offer a free first visit to anyone adopting a senior animal?
Don’t hesitate to take advantage of this educational and promotional opportunity! It’s a win-win for older pets and your business.
