Bird Lovers, Get Ready!

National Pet Bird Day is coming up on September 17!

First launched in 2019 by the Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (BEAK), this annual celebration recognizes the joy pet birds bring to our lives while also promoting responsible bird ownership. BEAK—a coalition of bird product manufacturers, retailers, and associations—also created the companion campaign MyBird.org to connect bird lovers and educate future owners.

According to the American Pet Products Association:

  • Nearly 6 million U.S. households own birds—and in each one, birds are truly part of the family.

  • About 14% of bird parents even travel with their birds.

  • Bird ownership spans nearly every generation:

    • Millennials: 36%

    • Baby Boomers: 26%

    • Gen Xers: 24%

And when asked why they own a bird?
A whopping 64% said simply because they’re fun to watch and have in the home.

We think that’s the perfect reason to celebrate—and maybe even welcome a new feathered friend into your life—this National Pet Bird Day.

Ways to Celebrate:

  • Go birdwatching and enjoy their beauty in the wild

  • Set up feeders or create natural habitats in your backyard

  • Read books to learn more about different species

  • Join citizen science projects like eBird

  • Advocate for bird welfare and share your passion using #NationalPetBirdDay and #NationalBirdDay

National Pet Bird Day reminds us to celebrate the joy, color, and companionship our feathered friends bring into our lives every single day

It’s a day to give thanks for the songs, the beauty, and the happiness that pet birds bring—because life is brighter with birds.
