Thinking About Alternative Health Care for Your Pet?

There are quite a few ways of helping our pets when they’re ill, anxious, or injured. Integrative-health veterinarian practices offer holistic alternatives to most common medical interventions. Holistic medicine treats the whole animal, mind, body, and spirit, not just an obvious symptom.

This field, known as CAVM (Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine), has national professional associations in many countries. Canada, the United States, and New Zealand all have similar views on CAVM. These include a requirement for vets to obtain sufficient education and training for alternative treatment approaches and techniques. Each veterinarian has the responsibility to be well-trained and to explain the range of available treatments, so clients can make informed choices for their pets.

These veterinarians are DMVs or DVMs who are trained in and practice conventional medicine, but whose main focus is on using more natural ways to aid in a pet’s recovery. There is probably at least one practice in your area. Search for “integrative pet medicine” or “alternative veterinary care. VetFinder.com or www.ahvma.org

Anxiety, pain (such as in arthritis), illnesses, skin problems, wounds, sports injuries, and behavioral issues can all be treated with alternative veterinary medicine. Your practitioner may recommend these and more:

  • Acupuncture or Acupressure

  • Chiropractic

  • Laser therapy

  • Pain management

  • Nutritional changes and/or nutraceuticals

  • Herbal treatment

  • Physical rehabilitation and massage

You may be familiar with some or all of these approaches. For example, many of us use Rescue Remedy when our pets are anxious or afraid. USFeliway.com is a source for diffusers and sprays that help relieve the stress of moves to a new home, changes in the environment, triggers (fireworks!), and so on. It’s available for dogs and cats. Many pet owners also rely on CBD for relief of pain, including arthritis and cancers.

Your own veterinarian may offer these alternatives, suggest other options or be able to refer you to an integrated-health practitioner. Ask your friends or family who have pets; they may already be taking advantage of the great things alternative veterinary care provides!
